Geo.F. Trumper is another of the famous and old English makers of traditional shaving products. It was established as a Gentlemen’s Barber Shop by George Francis William Trumper in 1875. Mr. Trumper was not only an excellent barber but also a master perfumer and soon gained a reputation as such among the gentlemen of London’s elite.
Trumper now has a large selection of shaving creams, excellent “skin food” aftershaves, and a range of over 20 fragrances. The shaving creams come in a large 200g bowl that makes them affordable ($2.66/oz). They also sell some of them in a 75ml tube that is very convenient for travellers, but these come out at a very expensive $5.30/oz. That is elite artisan-made soap territory. Still, they are handy for frequent travellers.
This cream has a pleasant but quite light (3/10) coconut scent, which is really not strong enough for my taste: I would like it to be at least a 5. The scent does bloom a little when lathering, but it doesn’t linger after the shave, so you need not worry about smelling like sun-tanning lotion after shaving.
Just a little goes a long way with this cream, about two almonds’ worth gives me enough lather to do three passes on both my head and my face. It lathers very easily in a bowl with my Plissoft brush and doesn’t require a lot of water. The Trumper’s creams are formulated to be easily face-lathered, but since I also shave my head, I prefer to lather in a bowl, and I haven’t tried face lathering with it. All I can say is that the lather is quite abundant, rich and creamy, about the consistency of real whipped cream. This cream provides good performance with very good lathering and cushion. Slickness is good and similar to TOBS’ and Proraso creams. The post-shave is good but not quite as nice as some of the better soaps, so I recommend using a good moisturizing aftershave balm. I got some excellent close and smooth shaves with this cream, with no irritation. Overall, a solid B for performance.
While the small 75ml tube and the fact that it can be faced lathered makes it an excellent choice for frequent travellers, it does make it a very expensive product. However, the large 200-gram tub is quite affordable, making Geo F. Trumper’s cream an A for value.
